Oaxaca ist eine mindestens 500 Jahre alte Stadt, in der viele Künstlerinnen und Künstler leben und die seit rund 35 Jahren zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe gehört.
Glücklicherweise ist sie noch nicht mit dem Virus des Massentourismus infiziert. Ich kann nur hoffen, dass das auch so bleibt.
Dennoch: Die Preise für Wohnraum sind in den letzten Jahren genauso explodiert, wie an anderen Stellen in der Welt. Insbesondere US Amerikaner haben sich für wenig Geld hier eingekauft und lassen den Wohnraum für die meiste Zeit des Jahres leer stehen, um wochenweise ihren Urlaub in Oaxaca zu verbringen. Ausländische Nachfrage und die dann damit verbundene Verknappung des Gesamtangebots sorgen dafür, dass die angestammte Bevölkerung hier kaum noch bezahlbaren Wohnraum findet. Entfesselter Kapitalismus eben.
Die Innenarchitektur der Kirchen zeigt, warum Oaxaca von den Conquistadoren aus Spanien vor 500 Jahren so begehrt war. Gold! Zapoteken und Azteken wurden mittels waffentechnischer, strategischer und taktischer Überlegenheit der Spanier unterworfen und deren Besitz geplündert. Was nicht nach Spanien gebracht wurde (wer in der Kathedrale von Sevilla war, weiß, was ich meine), wurde hier für Altäre und sonstige Ornamente in den Häusern des spanischen Gottes verwendet.
Die vielen kleinen, aber feinen Museen, Institute und Galerien in der Stadt zeugen von der Vielfalt der Kultur von früher und von heute. Historische und zeitgenössische Kunst werden in typisch kuratierten Ausstellungen präsentiert.
Das Essen in der Region soll das beste Mexikos sein. Ich selbst bin noch nicht so ganz überzeugt. Mit dem Genuss von Insekten, Würmern und Maden muss ich mich noch anfreunden.

Oaxaca es una ciudad que tiene al menos 500 años, es el hogar de muchos artistas y es Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde hace unos 35 años.
Por suerte, todavía no se ha contagiado del virus del turismo de masas. Sólo puedo esperar que siga así.
Sin embargo: Los precios de la vivienda se han disparado en los últimos años, como en cualquier otro lugar del mundo. Los estadounidenses en particular han comprado aquí por poco dinero y dejan el espacio habitable vacío la mayor parte del año para pasar sus vacaciones semanales en Oaxaca. La demanda extranjera y la escasez resultante de la oferta general aseguran que la población tradicional difícilmente pueda encontrar una vivienda asequible aquí. El capitalismo desatado.
El diseño interior de las iglesias muestra por qué Oaxaca fue tan codiciado por los conquistadores de España hace 500 años. ¡Oro! Los zapotecos y aztecas fueron sometidos por la superioridad técnica, estratégica y táctica de los españoles y sus posesiones saqueadas. Lo que no se trajo a España (cualquiera que haya estado en la Catedral de Sevilla sabe a lo que me refiero) se utilizó aquí para altares y otros ornamentos en las casas del dios español.
Los numerosos museos, institutos y galerías pequeños pero excelentes de la ciudad dan testimonio de la diversidad de la cultura del pasado y de la actualidad. El arte histórico y contemporáneo se presentan en exhibiciones típicamente curadas.
Se dice que la comida de la región es la mejor de México. Yo mismo no estoy del todo convencido. Todavía tengo que acostumbrarme a disfrutar de insectos, gusanos y larvas.

Oaxaca is a city that is at least 500 years old, is home to many artists and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for around 35 years.
Luckily, it hasn’t caught the mass tourism virus yet. I can only hope it stays that way.
Although: Housing prices have exploded in recent years, just like anywhere else in the world. US Americans in particular have bought here for little money and leave the living space empty for most of the year in order to spend some weekly vacation in Oaxaca. Foreign demand and the resulting shortage of the overall supply ensure that the traditional population can hardly find affordable housing here. Unleashed capitalism.
The interior design of the churches shows why Oaxaca was so coveted by the conquistadors from Spain 500 years ago. Gold! The Zapotecs and Aztecs were subdued by the Spaniards’ technical, strategic and tactical superiority and their possessions plundered. What was not brought to Spain (anyone who has been to Seville Cathedral knows what I mean) was used here for altars and other ornaments in the homes of the Spanish god.
The many small but fine museums, institutes and galleries in the city bear witness to the diversity of culture from the past and from today. Historical and contemporary art are presented in typically curated exhibitions.
The food in the region is said to be the best in Mexico. I’m not entirely convinced. I still have to get used to enjoying insects, worms and maggots.
